Spinal Canal Stenosis

Spinal canal stenosis happens when the space inside your backbone, where the spinal cord and nerve roots are, get too narrow. When this space shrinks, it puts pressure on the nerves and spinal cord. The effect can vary based on where in the spine the squeezing happens. It might lead to pain, trouble walking, heaviness or weakness in the legs, difficulty balancing, or even problems controlling your bowel and bladder.

Causes of Spinal Canal Stenosis

Spinal canal stenosis primarily occurs due to natural aging process, although some individuals may have congenitally narrowed spinal canals. Additionally, spinal stenosis can result from various factors such as:

  • Osteoarthritis and formation of bone spurs (osteophytes) associated with aging

  • Degenerative disc disease

  • Herniated or bulging discs

  • Slipped vertebrae, also known as spondylolisthesis

  • Traumatic injuries

  • Previous spinal surgeries

  • Spinal tumours

  • OPLL, which refers to the calcification of the spinal ligament.

Risk Factors for Spinal Canal Stenosis

  • Congenital narrow canal (by birth)

  • Age 50 and above

  • Previous injury to spine.

Symptoms of Lumbar Canal Stenosis

  • Trouble walking due to feeling of heaviness or fatigue in legs or experiencing low back pain

  • Sensation of numbness, weakness, cramping or pain in legs, which are relieved by sitting

  • Pain that travels down the leg

  • Decreased sensation in the feet severe enough to cause difficulty placing the feet when walking

  • Partial or complete paralysis of legs in severe cases

  • Impaired sexual function
